Masters runner eyes 2001

By Luke DeCock/The Gazette

Look out next year. Steve Gachupin is talking about running again.

“I’m gonna try,” he said. “I’d like to break that over-50 record.”
Gachupin, 57, won six straight Marathons from 1966-71, in addition to running marathons in all 50 states and the 1968 Olympic trials in Alamosa — he finished 15th, then came out a week later and won at Pikes Peak.

The resident of Jemez Pueblo, N.M, will be the subject of a book coming out next year.
